This is a video of my panel discussion at the 2021 SAFETY4SEA virtual forum on Navigational Safety & BTM (Bridge Team Management) on 20 October 2021
Though I recommend you watch the enitre day's talks, my section starts at 1 hr 37 mins
Some takeaways for me were:
- We all agreed that ECDIS was the major innovation in how ships are navigated, but its implementation should have been more human-centric
- One of the reasons why bridge resource management in airline cockpits has been more effective than on ship's bridges is perhaps the 'hierarchy baggage' from how work onboard ships was historically organised
- Not all features of ECDIS are understood or applied
- Going forward, we need to continue our focus on recruiting talent, navigation training and engagement
